What Is A Social Media "Expert"?

expertThe term "expert" is a bit lofty in this environment, I believe. I kindof don't like it anyway. But as humans, we suddenly produce "experts" by the droves, when there's enormous opportunity. So I see and hear this question a lot lately.

We've been creating content for the web, of many kinds, for many years, for many reasons. Always a student (this IS the trick, btw)… I understand that only someone that has been seriously, productively engaged with new media, every day… while huge areas of our society were being transformed by the internet… could entertain this status. As technologies go open-source, and ideas and digital assets go viral… being masterful means being engaged. No other way.

Leveraging social media successfully is part of being a brand "guru" today. An important part. Yes, I like "guru" better. In nearly every industry or market there is a need to optimize social business practices in order to strengthen and expand your brand. Yes... social media encompasses many aspects that mean different things to different markets or products... but any digital branding or social media professional needs to be an expert with change... in order to be effective today. Whether it's platforms, applications, marketing methodologies, design, programming, multi-channel objectives... it's all evolving very quickly and continuously. One has to keep up, keep pace, and embrace change... in order to be selling expertise.

What's great about working with our clients on social media, is that many times they understand it, and have very specific objectives. When we help them become a recognized "expert" in their market, by impressively putting themselves out there… we succeed, and learn. And our other clients who are just beginning to move their business into social media channels, benefit.
