Clients regularly ask about SEO. Many business owners are hoping to find the SEO Unicorn that gets them on Page 1 of the Googles. Here’s our response:
We’ve been designing/developing websites since 1994 - an essential and organic evolution from careers in design, marketing and business development. We pride ourselves with passionately seeking out the newest trends and technologies in our industry.
For example, when the issue of “Accessibility” surfaced early in the web’s lifetime, we quickly learned everything we could about developing for vision impaired users. We developed the first accessible e-commerce website for the Chicago Lighthouse For The Blind.
When animation became the Best New Thing, we learned Flash in it’s earliest versions - replacing our nifty GIF animations on our earliest websites including Radio Flyer. (We created Radio Flyer’s first website.) And then came cell phones with Flash? Yes, we learned that too… on early Nokia and Symbian devices.
At the dawn of the iPhone era, we developed an iPhone app that was featured on the Apple website as the top productivity web app for 3 months in a row. A million dollars of SEO couldn't have replaced the bump we received from Apple, because of their interest and advocacy of our product. People from all over the world were signing up online, within hours.
We adopted early the Joomla, Magento, and Wordpress CMS platforms. We are currently developing Responsive websites, and are at the front of this important technology.
We’ve learned a few things.
But every step of the way, we’ve believed in and consulted our clients to focus on the quality of their products, services, and message. The authenticity of their brands. SEO will happen organically the more you engage with your audience about your high quality offerings.
Offering quality across all marketing channels, treating your customers with respect, engaging them through communications that are relevant, interesting, humorous, thought provoking - these strategies are more important for “getting found” than wasting time and money chasing an SEO Unicorn. Slow and steady does win this particular race.
The funny thing is, sometimes clients feel suspicious when we tell them there is no magic bullet for getting on page one of Google - and that anyone who tells them differently might also be in the bridge-selling business. They want immediate results and believe the single solution is out there. We just don’t see it happen that way, though. We've had SEO successes, but it wasn't because of tricks or trends.
Get noticed by getting out there. Listen, read, write, blog, retweet... share, share, share. Discuss your ideas and expertise in your field, like we’re doing here. Basic SEO, such as using keywords and tags in your cross channel communications are a great place to begin and those strategies will help get you noticed. But, just as it took time for you to learn all you needed to learn to start your business, SEO as a means to grow your business, will also take time.
Most importantly, know your market, understand your audience, and talk with them. And have a beautiful and useful environment greet them when they do visit your website or social space.
But don’t just take our word for it... Fast Company agrees.
