The Work... How's It Goin'?

Give us the business in 2012.

Challenge us. Lean on us to help you build a fire underneath your business. Yes, in this economy. Trust us with your marketing and development resources, knowing we'll work hard and smart to deliver only the assets we know are superior and effective. Make it a point to become more knowledgable this year about online marketing and web technologies.. by shooting us a quick email or asking us on Facebook... any questions you have when they come up. Teach us about your industry.

This year we're growing our new brand… Network Greenhouse. That means working for successful people, and delivering great product and support. No other way. Without repeat business, we never would have survived this recession… and without expertise and creativity, and doing what and when we say we will, there wouldn't be any repeat business. We want to grow a little, learn a lot, and produce more crazy good work this year. Join us.

The economy is uncertain and difficult to forecast. But understanding the value of cultivating business relationships professionally is a no brainer. When we have an opportunity to communcate with potentially valuable new clientele, we're ready. Not because we've studied sales methods, but because we've studied the newest web development content, code and platforms.. cross channel digital brands.. mobile and multimedia software.. social media trends.. and more. We're ready to empower you in communicating your strengths and supporting your sales through internet and media, in a way that creates value. We're ready.

Joan and I are grateful for well established, and entirely new, business relationships and challenges every year. 17 of them now. Our fixation and curiosity about technology, art and design… and the way they're used to create the most compelling marketing tools of our time… is ever growing. We've been given incredible opportunities and support to accomplish our goals. We wish you the same.

Cheers.

pigBe The Guinea Pig: A Rebranding Experiment

Our kids have always thought it perfectly normal to come home from school and find the furniture arranged differently than it had been when they left the house in the morning. I like change. And wall color? That changes regularly, too. Paint is our friend. And if a sofa, painting, photograph, knick-knack, or throw-pillow stays in the same spot for very long, I feel compelled to move it to another space so I will notice it again, see it in a different light, remember why we have it, or who gave it to us. Or just be reminded to use it for it's intended purpose.

So, when my partner Brian and I realized we were bored stiff with our own web site, we decided to do for ourselves that which we love to do for our clients … Rebrand! During the 17 years we've shared our web design & development business, my partner and I changed our company's identity every now and then. We used various iterations of our name as a company name: McAlpin Group, McAlpin Group Media Arts, MCS (McAlpin Communications Studio) *Note: we changed that name when Yahoo, then a very small company, sent a sales rep to our door to sign us up for advertising, thinking we were a start-up ISP of the same name, MCS. But, I don't think that other MCS is around anymore.

We have occasionally switched colors around in our logo. We've used different fonts, too. But mostly, we changed our business landscape by adapting our skills to changes in technology and our industry. We were early adopters of Flash and all the applications that grew to be the Adobe Creative Suite. We learned how to code for mobile devices. We even had a web app for the iPhone ready to launch soon after the Apple smart phone became available. It was listed as the top productivity app for 3 months on the Apple website.

But 17 years with more or less the same look? Snooze. We wouldn't ever recommend that to our clients! We needed a shiny, new web site. And while we were at it, we decided to give ourselves a new name as well. We decided to become a rebranding experiment ourselves... Be The Guinea Pig!

We based our new brand on concepts of growth, creativity, and the immense role of networking in both social and business relationships. And our house is painted green. Paint is our friend.

For a small business, the leap into a new brand poses some challenges such as finding the time and money to develop new marketing materials. It also means bringing current customers up to date with the new landscape while assuring them their brands, products, and services will not be undermined in anyway during this process. And the new brand should be inspiring to new customers … and blow the competition out of the water.

For Brian and me though, these challenges gave us the opportunity to re-examine how & why we are running our own agency. We took a look at our processes, habits, workflow, and even pricing in a different light. We took the time to remember why we have this set of skills and knowledge, reminded ourselves of those we learned from, and those who helped us along the way. Important mentions: Joe Fife and Denny Grim for quality introductions, Margaret Plett for years of referrals, Jim Goulding for business coaching, Attorney David von Ebers for his expertise with all things legal, to name just a few.

When we started moving ideas and colors around to design a new look for our company, we re-ignited our own passion for beautiful web design, elegantly written code, clear messaging, and for helping our clients grow their own businesses. Rebranding reminded us of our own intended purpose… to work together as a family, to be creative, to learn something new each day, to work hard, make stuff, and have fun doing it. I think our new brand represents. And looking now at our new website, I'm proud of my partner and happy to get to work each day. No snooze. Just spark!

Shaping Web Development. Together.

Written by Brian McAlpin. Posted in The Work... How's It Goin'?

Remember when you used to see little numeric counters at the bottom of websites? Me too.

There is so much innovation and community in web development... constantly turning... that even if you're not like me, and think it's all very cool and interesting... you're still part of it. You're helping shape it as much as I am. Maybe more. What you've expected or demanded from a mobile device has directed enormous industries. You and I, and a couple user experience architects at Apple Computer, skipped a few chapters ahead in the life of a mobile phone. Of personal communications and commerce. Philanthropy, security, education.

The more our communications become interactive, the more we all become part of shaping it... pushing it forward. As with any massive expansion of human behavior, there are always barriers to the potential of innovation. But the story of the modern internet is the story of instant, open sharing of information and ideas. "Wouldn't it be cool if?..." is having it's day in the sun.

To millions around the world there never was a .com bubble, and it never burst. The incredible expansion of capabilities and technologies supporting our endeavours is more than enough to keep productivity at a break-neck pace. Many of the most amazing things going on on the web are high concept, low cost, sometimes free, rapidly emerging collaborations... many still driven by goals other than monetary. People spending enormous amounts of their time and energy on creating websites just so they can share their knowledge and learn from others. So they can raise money to help people they don't even know in other parts of the world. Probably have an app.

Many of the business successes we see on the web didn't begin by someone buying something for 600 million dollars and getting a great ad campaign developed. The spirit of this movement is in tact. Open source environments have emerged as some of the most influential and most rapidly adapted platforms for development, and their sensibilities toward user experience and sharing have defined many of the applications we use every day to bank, shop, invest, entertain and empower ourselves. Young, creative pioneers have seriously impacted the direction, products and messaging of the Microsofts and Apples of our time.

We use the Titanium open source platform by Appcelerator to build mobile applications for iPhone and Android. A great example of an open source focused firm really shaping the digital landscape. Here is some brief commentary on open source, and the state of development from Appcelerator...

We're fortunate to have worked for many interesting, successful people on creative, challenging businesses... helping them enable their ambitions as the web has grown. There are seemingly endless ways to apply your knowledge and style, express yourself, and always new things to learn. That's why we're here.
